Jose Mourinho could start Wayne Rooney from the bench in this weekend’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic being unavailable through suspension.
Ibrahimovic is out of the Arsenal game after picking up a yellow card in their win over Swansea City before the international break, but that notwithstanding, Mourinho is set to overlook Rooney, despite being the most senior and experienced forward available.
As per the report, Marcus Rashford is understood to be Mourinho’s preferred replacement, which leaves captain Rooney facing the prospect of another game on the bench.
Rooney, 31, has started just one of United’s last six Premier League games and is set to face more disappointment with Mourinho ready to opt for pace and youth up front.
The Red Devils’ skipper pulled out of England’s squad to face Spain with what was deemed a ‘minor knee injury’ but then found himself embroiled in allegations of an all-night drinking session.
Besides Ibrahimovic, Mourinho could also be without Antonio Valencia, while Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and potentially Luke Shaw and Marouane Fellaini, are going to miss out.
It will be the first time Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will face Mourinho since the latter’s appointment as the Manchester United manager.
