The Nigerian U20 women's team were paid a paltry N10,000 each on their return from the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea, which forced one of the players to suffer a traumatic breakdown and had to be hospitalized.
Falconets defender Mary Ologbosere suffered a traumatic breakdown and had to be referred to the traumatic unit of a hospital in Abuja after she suffered from depression following the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay the players on arrival from the U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea, according to AfricanFootball.com.
Ologbosere lost her father while the Falconets were at the World Cup in Papua New Guinea, and the entire family was counting on her to come back and bury him. But on her return to Nigeria on Wednesday afternoon, they were all shocked when they were each paid a paltry 10,000 Naira to return to their various homes.
And the 18-year old bereaved defender cried all through the night and had to be rushed to hospital as a result, where she has now been admitted at the traumatic unit.
“She is totally shattered by this heartless treatment,” a team official was quoted by AfricanFootball.com.
“It’s truly a pathetic case.”
The report also claims that the 10,000 Naira paid each player was the only money they received from the NFF since they opened training camp for the World Cup earlier this year and that the team has vowed not to leave the hotel they were booked into until they have got their cash.
It would also be recalled that the Nigeria U19 team led by Manu Garba were also paid a paltry 5,000 Naira each on their return from an invitational tournament in Suwon, South Korea, leaving many of them stranded.
